Nice, house, baby! Vanilla Ice to star in a reality show about his new career renovating property

By SOPHIE FORBES

The 42-year-old rapper, also known as Robert Van Winkle, became famous in the early 90's after his song Ice Ice Baby became the first hip hop song to ever top the Billboard charts.

But his career has made a complete 180 degree turn as he announced his new TV show The Vanilla Ice Project, which will follow the star as he renovates a 7000 square foot house in Palm Beach, Florida.

New direction: Former rapper Vanilla Ice is planning to relaunch his career with a reality show in which he renovates property

'It's funny, because it's not a new career direction, I've been doing this for over 13 years,' said Ice recently.

'Basically, when I had a lot of money when I was younger, I said - like most rock stars who are young and dumb - Let me go and buy a bunch of houses.'

'So I bought houses in L.A, in Laurel Canyon right next to Michael J. Fox; on Star Island, next door to Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, in Utah; and on Bleecker Street in New York.'

In his heyday: Seen here in 1991 at the American Music Awards during the days of his music career

'Three years went by. I never used any of them, and I thought it was the worst investment of my life. So I said, "Let's sell everything, and I'll have one primary house here in Miami."

'I was building homes in Florida, from $300,000 to $1.5million. The bottom dropped out of the real estate market, but I learned how to go to these seminars and read these books.

Van Winkle bought the Palm Beach house, a tax-lien property, for $400,000 at auction and gut renovated it for the show.

The Vanilla Ice Project starts on the DIY network on October 14.

Amy Childs: "I'll have my own reality show"

It seems that the red-head just can't seem to get enough of the public knowing her every move, and since she snubbed the newest series of TOWIE, we're guessing the only thing to do next is follow in the steps of former model Katie Price and create a show all about her very tanned self.

New Reality Show For ITV2

A new reality show will see six wannabe entertainment writers battle it out for a job on a magazine.

Commissioned by ITV2, new seven-part The Exclusives will see a group of aspiring young journalists compete in a whole host of challenges in the hope of landing a 12-month contract with one of Europe's largest magazine publishers, Bauer Media.

In addition to being given backstage access to some of the most high-profile awards ceremonies and parties of the year, the group will be coached in the art of interviewing, sourcing unique stories and connecting with their reader.

Mentored and trained by the teams behind the likes of more!, heat, FHM, Closer, Kerrang! and Empire, the six finalists will have to beat their rivals and impress a panel of industry experts in the hope of bagging their dream role.

Angela Jain, director of digital channels and acquisitions for ITV, said: "Working in the media is an opportunity that many young people would love to pursue and a peek at what it takes to get that chance on some of the country's most respected publications feels perfect for ITV2.

"The right candidate will have to demonstrate tenacity, initiative and creativity in abundance and watching them go through their paces should make for entertaining television."

Meanwhile, Abby Carvosso, managing director of Bauer Media, hopes the nationwide search will help to showcase some of the UK's best "raw talent".

She added: "This is a brilliant way to show the kind of raw talent and real skill you need to have to make it in the media today.

"This show demands total passion, dedication and expertise and the series will show what it really takes to create the most exciting magazines in the country. We're on the hunt for a gutsy, fearless and talented individual who stands out from the crowd."

The Exclusives will be broadcast later this year.
