Seven Dwarves

Channel 4, Tuesday 16 August
9:00pm - 10:00pm

1/7

I suppose it had to happen one day: an observational documentary series about the small actors who play Snow White's seven dwarves in pantomime. We are in good hands (producers Nick Curwin and Magnus Temple were behind One Born Every Minute and 24 Hours in A&E), but there's not a lot of dramatic heft here, despite some engaging characters. Still, Seven Dwarves avoids being exploitative by letting its subjects speak for themselves. This week it's the voluble Max (4ft 2in), who wants to move from panto to films. He's supported by a strong family, including his dad ("Max is a great friend as well as my son") and his twin sister, who is of normal height. But the most interesting bits are seeing the reaction of others to the dwarves, when they are routinely patronised by strangers or kissed by drunks in bars.
