The perils of political WAGdomWHEN struggling for the identity of a Celebrity Big Brother female contestant, two barrel-scraping categories are always worth a punt: former girl band member or WAG.
And so it is, that the new Channel 5 Celebrity Big Brother has brought to wider public attention a WAG of sorts. Sally Bercow, a 40-year-old mother-of-three, has a past career in advertising and drinking so much wine she used to end up on the wrong tube back home. Most significantly, however, she is the wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons.
There has been much media chattering about whether Bercow’s Big Brother role belittles the standing of her Tory husband, John Bercow. Commentators have questioned whether it’s right for her to take the CBB fee for fame found off the back of his political prominence, and she herself has confessed that John is “not exactly chuffed” about her appearance on the show.
But why not let this rather entertaining loudmouth have a blast? The John and Sally saga, as it has unfolded via her tweets and interviews, has offered some hilarious verbal slapstick. And surely there’s something to be said for women who refuse to be muzzled. As MP Louise Mensch commented last week: “Sally Bercow is her own woman and it’s about time people stopped seeing wives as adjuncts of their husbands.” Even John Bercow has made clear that Sally is not his “chattel”.
