1/12. Alan Sugar begins another search for a candidate worthy of setting up in business with him - with a £250,000 investment to help get their idea off the ground. The first task sees the 16 candidates split into two teams - boys versus girls - with each group buying blank goods, adding their own designs, then selling them on the streets of London in a test of creativity, marketing and salesmanship. While one team opts for cute kids' clothes, the other plays it safe with Union Jacks for tourists. But before long, the pressure of their tight deadline grows and the back-biting begins.

It has traditionally been the jewel in the BBC’s spring programming crown. But it seems The Apprentice is losing some of its lustre – after the opening episode pulled in an average of just 6.4 million viewers.

This is a drop of 1.4 million on first show in the 2011 series, raising questions about whether the public is tiring of the format.

Last year, The Apprentice peaked at 8.4 million viewers but Wednesday night’s programme could only manage 6.8 million.
