'I saw Jimmy Savile grope brain surgery patient': Ex-nurse claims she saw sex attack on teenage girl in hospital

In the latest shocking allegation, the nurse said he fondled the young woman while working as a volunteer porter in 1972

Sir Jimmy Savile molested a helpless hospital patient recovering from brain surgery, a retired nurse has claimed.

In the latest shocking allegation against the TV star, June Thornton, 80, said he fondled the young woman while working as a volunteer porter in 1972.

He was also accused of groping a teenager after an op at the same hospital in a separate claim.

About 40 women are now thought to have alleged they were abused by the Jim’ll Fix It star, who died last year aged 84.

Mrs Thornton, who was recovering from a back injury in the same ward Savile pounced on the brain-damaged victim, said: “He just helped himself to her.

“She was on another planet and just sat there in a chair while he did it.

"I can just remember lying there in my hospital bed powerless to stop him abusing this helpless girl but after that I felt powerless because who would believe me?”

And Mrs Thornton, of York, claimed she told a nurse at Leeds General Infirmary but she just shrugged her shoulders.

She added: “It was so strange – almost like itwas tolerated.

“It was a sign of the times – these rich showbiz types thought they could do anything they wanted. He was so brazen about it.”



Another North Yorkshire woman claimed she was touched inappropriately by Savile in a lift after spinal surgery a year later in 1973.

The woman, now 55, said: “I felt too frightened to report it because everyone thought he was a saint.”

A spokesman for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We don’t have any record of official complaints about Sir Jimmy Savile during the time he worked as a volunteer porter.

“We are aware of allegations broadcast within the ITV programme – none of which relate to our hospitals – and are following events closely.”

BBC director general George Entwistle has emailed staff urging them to tell police if they have any information about Savile’s alleged attacks.

He and other corporation bosses met child abuse officers at Scotland Yard yesterday.

Savile’s lifelong friend Howard Silverman, 64, said he was shocked by the allegations.

He said: “You would have thought there was more chance of being struck by lightning than this.

"Two weeks ago I was standing in Scarborough for the unveiling of his memorial.

“Two weeks on, he has gone from saint to almost Satan.”

Those responsible should be named, shamed and held accountable

Sir Jimmy Savile. It’s a name that sticks in your throat now, isn’t it? Particularly the “Sir” bit.

Think of that knighthood, the cosy friendship with Prince Charles, all that toadying from bosses at the BBC, which built an impenetrable force field around him.

No wonder he could allegedly carry on molesting young girls with impunity.

No wonder parents of girls like Ann, who bravely shares her story today, served them up like lambs to the slaughter.

It’s Jim’ll Fix It off the telly, the man who raises money for charity, he’s not going to do them any harm.

Yet for four decades Savile reportedly molested and raped children as young as nine, because no one stopped him.

His star status at the BBC was so high he knew he was untouchable. So untouchable that he turned his BBC dressing room into a disgusting under-age bordello. As one woman claimed in the ITV documentary on his abuse, he would stick his hand up the skirt of a 14-year-old while his mate Gary Glitter had sex with a 13-year-old in the same room.

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Was it just coincidence Savile made his name on kids’ programmes that guaranteed a constant supply of vulnerable teenage girls? Or what about those children’s charities he so famously backed? How convenient.

I don’t for a moment buy the faux outrage from BBC bosses who claim they had no idea what went on behind Jimmy’s door.

Dozens of alleged victims have now stepped forward, their stories flooding in like an open sewer. How could no one have known, suspected or even bothered to investigate at the time?

All it would have taken was someone in a position of power to blow the whistle and countless girls would have been saved from the sick fumblings of Savile and his paedo mates.

Some people are saying why bother holding an inquiry now? He’s dead and buried, move on. Bully to that.

Every single one of those 40 (and counting) women deserves to have her case heard and, if proven, offered an apology if not compensation paid from Savile's £7.8million estate.

But most of all, this inquiry needs to flush out all those bosses at the BBC who covered up this alleged wholesale abuse.

Until those responsible are named, shamed and held accountable, the abuse of teenage girls by powerful men will not be taken seriously.

For the sake of all our daughters in this fame-hungry world, this cannot ever be allowed to happen again.

Shamed pop star Gary Glitter could be jailed again over claims he raped a 13-year-old girl in Sir Jimmy Savile’s BBC dressing room.

The convicted paedophile, 68, will be arrested if his alleged victim is willing to speak to police, a source has revealed.

After an ITV documentary about Savile last week, a woman claimed she saw Glitter raping the teen at the height of his 1970s fame while the Jim’ll Fix It presenter was fondling a 14-year-old a few feet away.

Scotland Yard has launched a nationwide investigation after scores of women came forward to claim they had been molested by Savile, who died last year aged 84.

A source close to the investigation said Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, is almost certain to face questioning. The identity of the alleged victim is known to police.

The source added: “These are very serious offences and as long as the woman gives evidence to the police there is a very good chance Glitter will be nicked.”

Glitter shot to fame with glam-rock hits including I’m the Leader of the Gang (I Am) but was shunned by fans after being convicted of possessing child porn in 1999. The vile ex-rocker, who strongly denies the latest claims, was convicted by a Vietnamese court in 2006 of molesting two girls aged ten and 11.

He was jailed for three years and branded “disgusting and sick” by Judge Hoang Thanh Tung.

After last week’s ITV documentary, a woman claimed that she and two under-age friends were molested by Savile, Glitter and a third man at the BBC.

The girls were pupils at Duncroft boarding school for disturbed children. The woman said: “I saw Gary Glitter have sex with a girl in Jimmy Savile’s dressing room in that little alcove bit. I didn’t see it completely but that’s what was going on and nobody batted an eyelid.

“Jimmy Savile had a girl on his lap and he had his hand up her skirt.”
