Bradley Wiggins wins Sports Personality title

Bradley Wiggins was tonight named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, with Jessica Ennis second and Andy Murray third.

The 32-year-old was presented with the trophy by the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge, who was making her first public appearance since being treated in hospital for severe morning sickness.

Wiggins won the public vote after becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France, cycling's ultimate prize, in July, followed days later by the Olympic Time Trial on the streets of Surrey.

Some 1.5 million votes were cast.

Ennis, the Team GB Heptathlon gold medal-winner Jessica Ennis pipped Murray, the US Open tennis winner and Olympic gold medallist.

Murray received the award at his Florida winter training camp from boxing legend Lennox Lewis.
