Big Brother Canada: Kat Yee’s the first to go

Image

The first evictee on Big Brother Canada says she knew she would be voted out by her fellow contestants last night and stirred the pot before she left.

Kat Yee of Toronto says she felt her fate was sealed once she was nominated for eviction earlier this week, so she and fellow contestant Aneal Ramkissoon spread a lie about their friendship in order to advance his position and break up alliances.

The 27-year-old sporty bartender adds she’s now looking forward to watching the fallout from that lie.

The inaugural season of Big Brother Canada, which is based on the hit international reality TV franchise, debuted Wednesday on Slice with 15 contestants living together in a camera-rigged house.

Contestants scheme and compete in a series of challenges in a bid to win a grand prize of $100,000, a $25,000 gift card for The Brick and a Chevrolet Trax.

Yee says she had fun but notes it was also very stressful and she’s glad it’s over.

She adds she feels complimented by the eviction because it means people found her a strong and threatening contestant.

The show airs every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday on Slice.

Die-hard fans can also spy on the house 24 hours a day through the Slice website.

Big Brother Canada is looking at cheating claims

Big Brother Canada is investigating allegations that one of its most popular players cheated to gain key powers on the reality TV show.

Dairy farmer Emmett Blois was crowned “head of household” following a goofy challenge that put house guests in bulky bee costumes and sent them racing around a yard to collect plastic balls of “pollen” from fake flowers.

At stake was the right to nominate rivals for eviction from the house and a week-long stay in a private suite.

Competitors were told to carry the balls in pouches attached to their knees but some viewers complained online that Blois appeared to hold one or more in his hand.

Show host Arisa Cox says the footage is being reviewed to see “if appropriate steps need to be taken.”

She says a verdict would likely come down Friday, but viewers won’t be told until Sunday’s episode on Slice.

Vancouver's Alec Beall talks life in the Big Brother Canada house

Vancouver resident Alec Beall's Big Brother Canada journey has come to an end.

The 26-year-old doctoral student was one of two houseguests (Topaz Brady of Scarborough, Ontario was the second) to be evicted during a surprise double eviction on Thursday night. Five houseguests remain.

"I'm disappointed in myself," Beall said. "Seventh place is a disgrace. I should have played a better game."

Beall discusses his strategy for playing the game, his biggest regrets and where he will go from here, below.

Season finale expected to draw record audience

Big Brother Canada is getting record audiences for the Slice network

Barbara Williams isn’t saying if Big Brother Canada will be renewed for a second season.

But it’s pretty much a lock.

Big Brother Canada has had monster ratings for Shaw’s Slice TV network. And there’s no indication that Thursday’s finale will be any different.

“We’ve broken every record for Slice and for a Canadian reality show on a specialty channel,” says Williams, the senior vice-president of content for Shaw Media in an interview. “It’s really been hard to imagine.”

When the show debuted in March, the average Sunday ratings for Big BrotherCanada hit 711,000 viewers. The average comparable audience for the first two weeks of April have galloped to 931,000, with the April 14 weekend drawing the season’s highest audience to date.

Perhaps what is most astonishing is that the growth in audience share took place after the network stopped its free preview in April. That means a potential universe of 10 million viewers had shrunk to about seven million, since viewers typically have to upgrade from basic cable to get the channel.

Big Brother Canada winner Jillian MacLaughlin caught in a controversy

TORONTO - There are no hanging chads, but controversy swirls over a questionable vote that has crowned a Nova Scotia teacher the first-ever "Big Brother Canada" champ.

Athletic brunette Jillian MacLaughlin scored four votes from a seven-member jury tasked with deciding between her and her flamboyant co-finalist Gary Levy.

She eked out a win thanks to a surprise nod from Levy's best friend Topaz Brady, who made it clear throughout Thursday's two-hour finale she was rooting for Levy.

Upon realizing she mistakenly voted for MacLaughlin instead, Brady pleaded with show bosses to allow her vote be changed — to no avail. The flap elicited cheers and jeers from the studio audience who quickly took sides with boisterous catcalls.

As a result, MacLaughlin claims a $100,000 prize, along with a Chevy Trax and a $25,000 gift card to The Brick. As runner-up, Levy gets a $20,000 cash prize.
