Repeat: BBC1 Northern Ireland, Today 11:15pm“People who know me say, what, Juliet was raped?... big, strong, confident not-scared-of-anything Juliet? Yeah, she was raped.” After she was attacked Juliet was examined and helped by the all-female staff of the St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester. Cameras follow her as the police investigation into her attack progresses, and a suspect is identified.
Juliet knows she will be judged — CCTV footage of her from the night shows her to be drunk to insensibility. But, as a Crown Prosecution Service lawyer insists, “The alcohol is not the rapist. The rapist is the rapist.” As for Juliet, her life is altered for ever: “You learn to live with it, you can’t let it be you.”
Observational documentary following two rape investigations, from the forensic fact-finding and police inquiries to the court case and beyond. Juliet was attacked by a stranger on New Year's Eve, while Kellie had known her attacker for more than a decade. They are just two of the 1,000-plus victims seeking justice or trying to move on with their lives with the help of the staff at St Mary's Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester.
