Big Brother’s latest launch night has also been its least watched in show history, with the Channel 5 programme coming off worst in a ratings catfight with BBC Two.

According to overnight figures, the opening of the show’s 14th series – which saw nine of the latest contestants enter the house – scored average ratings of 1.99m when it was screened between 9pm and 10.30pm.

A further 146,000 viewers tuned in an hour later on the catch-up service Channel 5+1 – but the figure was still down 600,000 on the ratings for 2012′s opening night show.

Ultimately, it appeared that viewers found cats more interesting than housemates, with Big Brother soundly beaten in the ratings by BBC Two’s feline documentary Horizon: The Secret Life Of The Cat.

A follow-up show, Little Cat Diaries, is due to be shown on BBC Two at 10pm on Friday, clashing with the last half hour of Big Brother’s second live launch show.

Big Brother’s ex-cop housemate prompts time delay on live shows

Channel 5 is reportedly set to introduce a five-minute time delay to its live Big Brother broadcasts following the arrival of former policeman Daniel Neal into the house.

According to the Mirror the station has made the move following concerns from Scotland Yard over Neal – who worked on the Operation Yewtree investigation before quitting the force – becoming a housemate.

They have also offered reassurance that the shows will not broadcast anything which could be potentially libellous or constitute contempt of court.
