This is the artfully staged opening to a challenge that will later provoke a boardroom eruption from Sugar. “It’s a bloody disgrace!” he will fume. “You told me you can do things, you lot — you can’t!” Fingers are pointed. Tears are shed.
But first there’s the sales task to complete, which involves flogging camping accessories at a big caravan show. There aren’t quite the humiliations and horrors we always hope for, but there are comically flubbed lines (“It’s an extional opstra”) and surreal double entendres (“Hello madam, do you want to have a look at my boat box?”) as the candidates adjust their antennae to a market they largely despise. “I literally hate caravans,” opines one, but he turns on the fake enthusiasm like a pro.
7/12. The candidates are called to the Tower of London, where Alan Sugar sets them the task of selling products at the Motorhome & Caravan Show. While some of them test camping accessories and try to win over suppliers, the project managers head straight to the NEC in Birmingham to each select an item worth thousands of pounds. On sales day, the teams divide, with half pushing must-haves such as electric bikes and rooftop boats, and the rest attempting to shift expensive trailers - and with price tags of up to £17,000, every minute counts in the race for a winning deal. Later, in the boardroom, the blame game begins on the losing side and Lord Sugar has a few surprises in store.
