BBC1 HD, BBC1 (not Wales)
Repeat: BBC1 Wales Today 11:05pmIn a series of conversations with Alan Yentob (who for once seems to be really enjoying himself), Rod Stewart reflects on his lengthy career, constant image reinventions and the succession of leggy blondes who have shared his life (and given him eight children aged between 50 and two).
The footage of Rod’s Jack the Lad antics (yes, that TOTP football-kicking performance of Maggie May is here) and superstar lifestyle is entertaining, if a little well worn, but there are some black-and-white clips from the early 1960s of a teenage Rod (and his parents) that are utterly charming. In fact, the 68-year-old Rod comes over as utterly charming, too.
3/6. The veteran rocker invites Alan Yentob to his LA home for a series of conversations in which he looks back on a career spanning almost 50 years. He discusses working with acts like the Steampacket and Jeff Beck in the 1960s and his time with the Faces, whose offstage antics became legendary - as did Rod's affairs with a string of famous women. His solo career propelled him to superstardom with songs such as Maggie May and Sailing, and while the 1980s proved a critical disaster, his constant reinvention has given him a lasting career. Having more recently become known as a singer of American standards, he has now recorded Time, his first album of new material in almost 20 years.
