The Great British Bake Off It’s a national institution. It’s Eric and Ernie, it’s the Tate Gallery, it’s the British Museum, all rolled into one, and it’s back, so all is well with the world once more. The fourth series of The Great British Bake Off begins with a baker’s dozen of jittery hopefuls in their smart aprons. Paul Hollywood, with his best Bond-villain stare, and his minder Mary Berry cast their gimlet gazes over a Signature Challenge that demands the making of a sandwich cake. Which might sound simple enough, indeed Hollywood even describes it as “straightforward”, but that doesn’t mean easy, oh no.
As subsequent gruelling Technical and Showstopper Challenges turn that sunny Somerset tent into a cauldron of tears, blood (there are cut thumbs) and lashings of self-doubt (“Should I top it with cream? Or should I not?”), Berry and Hollywood crush dreams and raise hopes. Welcome back!
ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
1/16. The return of the contest to determine Britain's best amateur baker, as 13 contenders face tasks devised by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. They must first make a sandwich cake, before having to follow Mary's basic recipe for angel food cake in the opening technical challenge. The showstopper round involves producing a chocolate-based cake and is the final chance to avoid being the first to leave the tent.
