Police apologise to Andrew Mitchell for plebgate affair

The Police Federation has apologised to Andrew Mitchell, the former Chief Whip, over the “plebgate” affair as a review criticised the organisation’s “politics of personal attack”.

The body, which represents rank and file officers, also apologised to the public because the “unfortunate incident” had undermined people’s confidence in policing.

Police Fed Chiefs Quit After 'Turbulent Period'

Two Police Federation chiefs have decided to quit their posts following what one described as a "turbulent period in its history".

Chairman Steve Williams and general secretary Ian Rennie announced they will be retiring at the end of May following the Plebgate scandal and and an independent review that revealed the organisation had around £95m in reserves and assets.

Announcing his decision to stand down, Mr Williams said: "The Police Federation has faced a turbulent period in its history and there has been much criticism of our organisation and the way certain members behaved.

Mitchell Claims Policewoman Boasted To Friend She Could Bring Down Government

A policewoman involved in the infamous Plebgate row on Downing Street between officers and former chief whip Andrew Mitchell boasted to a friend that she could bring down the Government, the Conservative MP has claimed. Mitchell said full disclosure of Metropolitan Police gross misconduct hearings will show the woman texted a friend two days after the altercation saying: "I can topple the Tory Government".

In a letter to Met chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe demanding publication of transcripts of the hearings, Mitchell claimed an officer involved sent a message saying "the Fed need our help", a possible reference to a dispute between the Police Federation and the Government. Mitchell said full disclosure of the misconduct hearings would also show that other officers lied about the confrontation, despite what the MP called "police leaks" claiming otherwise.

Susan Johnson, formerly a police constable in the diplomatic protection group, is dismissed without notice after a gross misconduct hearing.

In a statement the Metropolitan Police said: "The panel found the case against Susan Johnson proven as she had breached standards of professional behaviour in relation to honesty and integrity; confidentiality; discreditable conduct and challenging and reporting improper conduct."
