The 71-year-old comedian from Warwickshire was first arrested in November 2012 by detectives from sex crime inquiry Operation Yewtree, and was re-bailed several times.

Today prosecutors said he will not be charged in relation to 13 alleged victims because of insufficient evidence, and that action will not be taken over another because it is not in the public interest.

Baljit Ubhey, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: ‘Having carefully reviewed this case, we have decided that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute Freddie Starr in relation to allegations of sexual offences made by 13 individuals.

Stuart Hall trial: Veteran broadcaster 'raped young girls in BBC dressing room after plying them with drink'

The 84-year-old is alleged to have attakced two young girls on various dates more than 35 years ago.

Opening the prosecution case at Preston Crown Court, Peter Wright QC said Hall sexually abused his first victim on dates between January 1, 1976 and September 30, 1978, when she was aged between 14 and 16.

The second girl was repeatedly raped in the same period up until 1979 or 1980 when she said she was aged between 12 and 15, the court heard.

Last year, Hall, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, pleaded guilty to 14 offences of indecent assault against 13 girls or young women and was jailed for 15 months.

The sentence was subsequently increased to 30 months at the Court of Appeal.
