From todays Media Guardian (12/06/03) forther analysis of the collapse in BB4's viewing figures......'' The reason for Big Brother's audience growth tailing off could be a sign that viewers' fascination with the show has hit a ceiling, or that the choice of housemates this year is not proving as much of a draw as in previous years. No Big Brother characters have yet emerged to match contestants such as "Nasty" Nick Bateman or Jade Goody from previous series. So far the only real stand-out figure has been nerdish know-it-all Jon Tickle, who appears to infuriate and entertain viewers in equal measure......

On Monday and Tuesday night this week the 10pm highlights edition averaged 4.7 million viewers. This compares with 5.8 million viewers on average for the equivalent nights in Big Brother 3, when viewer interest was boosted because of the rich and poor split. Overall, the 10pm weekday highlights show has averaged 4.3 million viewers over 10 editions - down 300,000 on where this element of Big Brother was in 2002.
And the Saturday live task edition is 1 million viewers down on last year after two weekends, at 2.8 million......

Frpm Today's Media Guardian

And from 'This Is London'........''Viewers are deserting reality TV show Big Brother in droves, figures reveal.

Celebrity Big Brother has been canned and critics say the show's fourth series is boring.

Figures show that audiences are lower than last year's - almost 40 per cent some nights. Viewing figures for the weekday 10pm updates are on average 700,000 lower. The Saturday night average has plummeted from 4.1million last year to 2.7million. Even Friday nights - when the contestants are evicted - are fading. The three eviction shows at 8.30pm have so far averaged 4.7million. In 2002 they were 4.9million''

Give them alcohol and you have a show. We seen this with the spin the bottle night.

Heard many rumours saying BB producers have many tricks up their sleeves, but havent seen one yet. They need to do something, people I know are deserting it. They say its just boring and that most people in there are not likeable.

Its day 21 and I still cant believe how they picked this lot out of 10,000. It could ruin the show and if it does I hope the people who picked them never work again.

I hope it gets better, but unless the producers start showing us one of their tricks then viewers will desert.

Quite right. They are just sitting around keeping their heads down waiting for the payroll. The slump in viewing figures doesn't surprise me ...

From what I've seen so far no one has stood out apart from Jon. On this basis he thoroughly deserves to win as all the others are just making up the numbers. How can anyone think Ray or Scott is a more worthy winner than Jon because they haven't entertained us. If they win simply because 'they are fit' then that says a lot about us as viewers.

From the 'news.Scotsman' site a more considered & interesting article regarding what is going wrong with Big Brother 4 and comparing it with other Realty TV series.......

''THE housemates are duller than a wet Sunday afternoon in February, viewers are turning off in droves and the celebrity version has been axed because it’s not interesting enough. It’s almost hard to believe after the roaring success of the last three series, but it seems that the Big Brother bubble is very close to bursting.

The few viewers of the Channel 4 reality TV phenomenon will know that this year’s housemates appear to be blessed with even less intelligence and character than ever, and, apart from a passing interest in Jon’s irritating geekiness and the size of the now-evicted Anouska’s chest, there have been few storylines for the public to latch on to. Even the £50,000 prize offered by one tabloid newspaper to the first couple to have sex doesn’t look like it will be won despite predictions that this, the fourth, series would be the raunchiest ever. .....

........Cynthia McVey, a psychology lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University who took part in the BBC’s Castaway series, believes this set of housemates are too aware of how they could be portrayed through the editing of the show to be entertaining........

..........Apart from Federico not disclosing that he failed them the second task, there haven’t really been any noteworthy storylines either. This could be an indication that the programme is beginning to play itself out. It’s unfortunate but true that if people sit around knitting and being nice to each other all the time then we soon get very fed up. This is the trouble with the housemates watching their p’s and q’s so much."

McVey believes that Castaway, where contestants spent a year living on the west coast island of Taransay, and I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! have much greater scope for entertainment because more things happen naturally.........''

I blame Jon for the failure of BB4.
From the start, he has got on the wrong side of the housemates with his boring ramblings on 'his' chosen subject. His constent visit to the diary room, and his campaign to camera for his 'Time delay' toaster. All he has to do, is go to Argos, He will have a choice of 3/4 toasters with 'reheat facility'. He also FAILED this weeks task!!!!!. The Plank!.

I remember a few weeks ago being a tinsy wincy bit gutted that the holiday I booked ages ago was gonna make me miss the last 2 weeks of Big Brother. But going by what we've seen so far I think I made a good choice with dates! I'm sure Fed will be evicted before I go, so I won't miss any potential fights between him and Ray (if they have any), and I really can't see any of the other boring farts doing anything that I'll miss.
Will still get my sister to tape the CH4 shows and evictions though just in case. ;)

{@} Holiday! :)

I think the housemates this year are far too aware of what the public opinions on themselves will be, therefore most are playing their personalities down, hoping to be that "diamond in the rock" that allways seems to get far. Trouble is they are all doing it and we are not entertained.

I know this will not be popular but Jon is the only one being himself and doesn't give a damn what people think of him. and I really don't like him!

You're right, Ray and Scott have been boring and should not be kept in by the 'I love' girlie set - HOWEVER, of late Ray has become slightly more interesting and if he punches Fudd he will be my hero in the short term. :D
Overall, Jon is the deserving winner of BB4 ()^ ()^

The main reason why I'm not watching the C4 shows apart from the eviction and Saturday night task shows is that this year more than others C4 / BB are showing less of watch actually happens. They tend to focus on one or two HM then work on them.
Then when something does happen they hardly show any of it.

Almost all my viewing is via the Broadband Internet feeds ,and I have both feeds running most of the time.
